CBI forms SIT to probe Manipur violence, DIG rank officer to command

Manipur Violence: The CBI on Friday (June 9) constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under a DIG rank officer to probe the violence in Manipur. Recently, a ‘tribal solidarity march’ was taken out on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status in the state, but after that violent clashes started.

Many people’s houses were burnt in the violence, people were killed and many people were rendered homeless. At least 100 people have been killed and 310 others injured in the clashes. At the same time, 37,450 people are currently living in 272 relief camps.

Whose population in Manipur
According to the news agency PTI, the population of Meitei community in Manipur is 53 percent and it mainly lives in Imphal Valley. At the same time, tribal communities like Naga and Kuki constitute 40 percent of the population and mainly live in the hilly districts. About 10,000 soldiers of Army and Assam Rifles have been deployed to restore peace in the state.
